Pre-primary, Primary and Secondary

Pre-primary, Primary and Secondary Education Statistics.

 

Service Objectives 

The purpose of the pre-primary, primary, and secondary educational statistics survey is to enable scientific and comprehensive analysis of the overall current status of early childhood education, elementary and secondary schools in Korea and to provide information on the planning, implementation, evaluation, and research of educational programs.

Materials on statistical data such as 'Statistical yearbook of education' and 'Brief statistics on Korean education' are published and provided to serve the purpose of the users. The survey also aims to provide various statistical data for educational policy-making and research. 

What we do

This survey covers all students, faculty members, facilities, and budget of about 20,000 pre-primary, primary and secondary schools and educational administrative agencies, including kindergartens, elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, miscellaneous schools, special education schools, educational administrative agencies (e.g. the Ministry of Education, municipal and provincial offices of education, and other related agencies). We collect data and provides various publications. 

History

1963 : State-approved as the 'basic survey of education' (No. 11201), conducted by the National Board of Educational Evaluation.

1997 : "Statistical Yearbook of Education", "Handbook of Education Statistics", "Education Indicators of Korea", "Social Indicators of Korea" published.

1998 : Regulations on Basic Survey of School (Mar. 1998, Directives of the Ministry of Education, No.565).

2006 : Designated as 'state-designated statistics' by the National Statistical Office (No. 334001)

2009: A pilot survey by "National Education Information System"(NEIS) (North Chungcheong Province and Busan)

2010: Changed the survey system to a "NEIS".

2011: Introduction of "The Second Generation of National Education Information System(NEIS)".

2012: Sub-national database system launched. 

2014: "National Education Information System for School" launched. The 1st Education Statistical Survey of School (fall semester).

2015: Integrate relevant research institutes' database (information disclosure and scholarship statistics)

2018: Kindergarten survey (the second half of the year, as of October 1).

Survey subjects

School levels: 9,021 kindergartens, 6,064 elementary schools, 3,214 middle schools, 2,358 high schools, 175 special education schools, 3 civic high schools, 7 trade high schools, 60 miscellaneous schools and 66 Air and Correspondence middle & high Schools.

Administrative Agencies: 17 municipal and provincial education offices and 176 regional education support offices.

※ Reference date is as of April 1, 2019. Closed schools and branch schools are also survey targets of the survey process but excluded from 'the number of schools'.

Expected Outcomes

Provide basic information for the education policy-making, such as legislation related to educational administration, standards of schools, teachers, and other educational issues.

Provide reference data for allocating finances and expenses required for educational activities.

Provide public and private sector with open information service such as international educational statistics, general administrative data, research reports.
